Safran selected by Boeing for X-66 NASA Sustainable Flight Demonstrator
Farnborough Airshow , July 23. Safran Electrical & Power has been selected by Boeing to provide the electrical power generation system for the X-66 flight demonstrator, part of NASA’s Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project. Safran Electrical & Power will also support ground and flight tests, slated to start in 2028.
The Sustainable Flight Demonstrator is part of NASA’s broader Sustainable Flight National Partnership, which is dedicated to developing the technologies needed to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions for commercial aviation. Boeing’s X-66 program is focused on developing the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) concept, which could enable significant improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions for future single-aisle aircraft.
This electrical power generation system consists of a variable frequency generator and its associated control unit, integrating the most advanced technologies developed by Safran Electrical & Power. It has been adapted to integrate directly on the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine and provides more than 100kW of electrical power. This modern system features an unmatched weight and efficiency, and enables a reduction in hydro-mechanical losses of close to 50%, resulting in significant fuel burn and carbon emission savings.
