ILA Berlin 2026 opens with focus on aerospace innovation, security and sustainability

Berlin, June 11. ILA Berlin 2026 opened on June 10 under the theme ‘Pioneering Aerospace’, bringing together the global aerospace community at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) with a strong emphasis on innovation, sustainability, security and technological sovereignty.
More than 750 exhibitors from 37 countries are participating in the five-day event, which is expected to attract around 100,000 visitors and nearly 330 delegations from over 60 nations. Organisers said the event reaffirms its status as Europe’s leading trade fair for aerospace, defence and technological innovation.
The exhibition showcases developments ranging from climate-friendly aviation and new space technologies to defence and security solutions, while serving as a platform for collaboration among industry leaders, governments, armed forces, research institutions and startups.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz formally inaugurated the event. The opening ceremony and tour were attended by several senior political leaders, including Brandenburg Minister-President Dietmar Woidke, Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner and a number of state premiers. Federal ministers expected at the event include Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, Economy and Energy Minister Katherina Reiche, Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder and Research, Technology and Space Minister Dorothee Bär.
Organisers said the strong political participation reflects the growing strategic importance of the aerospace sector amid geopolitical tensions, rapid technological change and increasing demands for security and economic competitiveness.
Michael Schollhorn, President of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI), said the event comes at a time when Germany and Europe urgently require economic growth, sustainable mobility, access to space, and enhanced security and sovereignty.
According to Dirk Hoffmann, Chief Operating Officer of Messe Berlin, the exhibition continues to expand and strengthen its position as Europe’s premier aerospace innovation platform, bringing together international stakeholders and fostering partnerships and technological advancement.
The event features discussions on three stages involving senior representatives from governments, industry, academia and the armed forces. Key themes include sustainable aviation, defence preparedness, space technologies, digitalisation, workforce development and Europe’s technological competitiveness.
Among the prominent speakers are European Space Agency Director General Josef Aschbacher, astronauts Matthias Maurer, Alexander Gerst and Rabea Rogge, German Aerospace Centre Chairwoman Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, and German Air Force Inspector General Lieutenant General Holger Neumann. A security-focused discussion organised by the Transatlantic Bridge will feature NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus G Grynkewich and Bundeswehr Inspector General General Carsten Breuer.
Around 100 aircraft are being showcased during the exhibition through static displays and flying demonstrations. The German Armed Forces’ Heron TP unmanned aerial vehicle is making its first appearance in the flying display, transmitting high-resolution live imagery to screens across the venue. Leonardo’s AW249 combat helicopter is also debuting at the exhibition.
Other major attractions include Boeing’s P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and General Atomics’ Do228 NXT. Static displays feature the Airbus Beluga, Emirates’ Airbus A380 – the world’s largest passenger aircraft – and a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo carrying a special “100 Years of Lufthansa” livery.
Unmanned systems constitute one of the key themes of ILA Berlin 2026. For the first time, organisers have introduced a dedicated drone pavilion, complete with a drone cage where live demonstrations are being conducted.
The exhibition has also launched a Start-up Hub aimed at connecting emerging technology companies with industry partners, investors and government customers. Startups are presenting innovations spanning autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and new space technologies.
The programme on June 12 will focus on careers and talent development through the Talent Hub, where companies will engage with students, young professionals and specialists from across the aerospace sector. A dedicated programme for aspiring pilots has been introduced for the first time.
ILA Berlin 2026 runs from June 10 to 14. While the first three days are reserved for trade visitors, the exhibition will open to the general public on June 13 and 14. Organisers said tickets for the public weekend have already sold out.
