India, Germany explore quantum technologies, space cooperation and deep-tech partnerships
New Delhi, June 2. India and Germany have identified quantum technologies, photonics, space research and deep-tech innovation as key areas for future collaboration during talks between Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences and Space Dr Jitendra Singh and Minister-President of the Free State of Thuringia, Germany, Mario Voigt, who is currently visiting India.
The meeting on June 2 brought together senior representatives from government, scientific institutions, research organisations and industry from both countries to explore ways of strengthening innovation ecosystems and accelerating cooperation in emerging technologies.
The Indian side included senior officials such as Rajesh S Gokhale and N Kalaiselvi, along with representatives from the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Space, DRDO and other scientific institutions. The German delegation comprised government officials, researchers, industry representatives and technology experts from the German state of Thuringia, a major European hub for optics, photonics and quantum technologies.
Welcoming the delegation, Dr Singh highlighted the strong foundation of India-Germany relations in science, technology and innovation, noting that the two countries celebrated 50 years of scientific and technological cooperation in 2024. He said research collaboration had become one of the most important pillars of bilateral engagement and continued to open new opportunities in frontier areas of innovation and industrial development.
A major focus of the discussions was cooperation in quantum technologies and photonics, sectors increasingly viewed as critical to future technological competitiveness. Both sides explored opportunities in quantum communication, quantum satellite communication, optical ground stations, quantum networks and advanced photonics systems, recognising the complementary strengths of India and Germany in these domains.
The German delegation shared developments in European quantum communication initiatives and optical communication infrastructure, including efforts under the EuroOGS network aimed at advancing standardisation and interoperability in optical ground station technologies. The two sides discussed avenues for scientific exchanges, joint research and institutional partnerships involving universities, research centres and technology organisations.
Dr Singh outlined progress under India’s National Quantum Mission, including advancements in secure quantum communication and related technologies. Discussions also covered emerging trends in quantum computing, communication infrastructure, standards development and talent exchange, with both sides expressing interest in expanding collaboration in these strategic areas.
Highlighting India’s growing innovation ecosystem, the minister pointed to initiatives such as the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, which seeks to strengthen links between academia, industry, startups and research institutions. He noted that India now hosts the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem and offers significant opportunities for international partnerships across sectors ranging from biotechnology and healthcare to artificial intelligence, semiconductors, clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
The talks also focused on expanding cooperation in the space sector, building on the long-standing partnership between Indian Space Research Organisation and German Aerospace Centre. Dr Singh highlighted India’s expanding space capabilities, recent policy reforms encouraging private-sector participation and the growing role of startups in the country’s space economy.
Noting that India has successfully launched 11 German satellites aboard Indian launch vehicles, the minister reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in space research, technology development and commercial applications. Discussions covered potential partnerships in satellite communications, optical communications, Earth observation, drone technologies, microgravity research, human spaceflight and future space exploration missions.
Both sides also emphasised the importance of building stronger links among governments, research institutions, universities, startups and industry to accelerate the commercialisation of research and the development of globally competitive deep-tech enterprises. The discussions underscored the growing need for collaborative frameworks that can translate scientific breakthroughs into deployable technologies and market-ready products.
Dr Singh highlighted the role of the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre in promoting industry-oriented research projects, innovation partnerships and researcher exchange programmes. He said the next phase of India-Germany scientific cooperation offers substantial opportunities in quantum technologies, photonics, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, space technologies and deep-tech entrepreneurship.
The two sides expressed confidence that closer engagement among governments, scientific institutions, industry and startups would further strengthen the India-Germany strategic partnership and support innovation-driven growth while addressing future technological and global challenges.
