India, Indonesia review strategic partnership, pledge deeper cooperation across key sectors
New Delhi, June 7. India and Indonesia on June 7 reviewed the full spectrum of their bilateral relationship and agreed to deepen cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including defence, maritime security, trade, digital technologies, energy and space, during the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) held in New Delhi.
The meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono.
The two ministers assessed progress under the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and explored new avenues for expanding collaboration in political affairs, defence and security, maritime cooperation, trade and investment, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, digital technologies, connectivity, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
The discussions also covered cooperation in emerging areas such as energy and space, reflecting the growing breadth of engagement between the two countries.
During the meeting, both sides noted that recent high-level interactions, particularly discussions between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including Prabowo’s state visit to India in January 2025, had injected fresh momentum into bilateral ties and helped advance cooperation across multiple sectors.
The ministers also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening coordination in regional and multilateral forums.
Welcoming the positive trajectory of bilateral relations, the two sides expressed satisfaction with the steady expansion of cooperation and agreed to hold the next Joint Commission Meeting at a mutually convenient date in the near future.
India regards Indonesia as a key pillar of its Act East Policy and an important partner in the Indo-Pacific region. The relationship, anchored in centuries-old civilisational and cultural links, has evolved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership encompassing political, economic, defence and maritime cooperation.
The meeting underscored the commitment of both countries to further strengthening their partnership as they seek to expand collaboration in both traditional and emerging areas amid an evolving regional and global landscape.
