Rajnath Singh unveils ‘Defence Forces Vision 2047’ to build future-ready Indian military

New Delhi, March 10. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on March 10 unveiled a long-term strategic blueprint titled “Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military”, aimed at transforming India’s armed forces into a modern, integrated and technologically advanced force by the centenary of the country’s independence.

The vision document, prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, lays out a comprehensive plan to modernise the armed forces and align them with India’s broader aspiration of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

According to the Defence Ministry, the roadmap proposes wide-ranging reforms, capability upgrades and organisational restructuring within the military to meet the challenges posed by a rapidly evolving geopolitical, technological and security environment. The strategy seeks to develop an integrated, multi-domain and agile force capable of deterring adversaries, responding effectively across the full spectrum of conflict and safeguarding India’s expanding strategic interests.

A key pillar of the vision is greater jointness and synergy among the Army, Navy and Air Force. The document stresses improved coordination in planning, operations and capability development to enhance operational effectiveness and resource optimisation.

It also emphasises the role of innovation, emerging technologies and modernised training systems to ensure that the armed forces remain adaptable to the demands of future warfare.

Promoting self-reliance in defence production is another major focus of the plan. The roadmap calls for accelerated development and adoption of indigenous technologies to meet India’s specific security requirements while strengthening the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The document proposes a phased roadmap with clearly defined capability targets across short-, medium- and long-term timelines. Officials said this structured approach will guide the development of critical military capabilities, institutional reforms and strategic partnerships needed to build a world-class defence force.

Highlighting the complexity of emerging security challenges, the vision also advocates a whole-of-nation approach to national security by integrating military strength with diplomatic, technological and economic capabilities.

By 2047, the blueprint aims to position India’s armed forces as a technologically advanced, combat-ready and globally respected military, contributing to the goal of a strong and resilient developed India.

Among those present at the event were Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Naval Staff Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Air Staff AP Singh, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Vice Chief of the Army Staff Pushpendra Singh, along with other senior officials.
