India, Qatar elevate bilateral relationship to Strategic Partnership

NEW DELHI. India and Qatar have officially elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership during the State Visit of Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit, held from February 17-18, marked a significant milestone in India-Qatar relations and aimed at deepening cooperation across multiple sectors.

During the visit, the Amir was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan and engaged in high-level discussions with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, security, energy, technology, education, and culture.

According to a joint statement issued by the two sides following delegation-levels talks, a landmark ‘Agreement on the Establishment of Bilateral Strategic Partnership’ was signed, signifying the growing depth of diplomatic and economic ties.

Trade and investment were key focus areas, with both nations agreeing to expedite the India-Qatar Bilateral Investment Treaty negotiations. Qatar also committed to investing $10 billion in India, recognising its rapid economic growth and business-friendly environment. The Joint Working Group on Trade and Commerce was upgraded to a Joint Commission, further strengthening economic collaboration.

Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of the partnership, with both sides pledging to enhance collaboration in energy trade and infrastructure. Additionally, financial integration took a step forward with the operationalization of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Qatar, facilitating smoother transactions.

Security and defence cooperation were reinforced, with both nations condemning terrorism and agreeing to bolster intelligence-sharing, cybersecurity, and counterterrorism measures. The two sides also stressed the importance of people-to-people ties, acknowledging the contributions of the Indian expatriate community in Qatar and expanding visa facilitation.

Cultural and educational exchanges will be strengthened through institutional partnerships, joint research initiatives, and the celebration of the India-Qatar Year of Culture, Friendship, and Sports. Cooperation in healthcare, food security, and sports was also emphasised as areas of mutual interest.

The visit underscored the growing strategic importance of India-Qatar relations, with both nations pledging continued high-level engagements and collaboration in multilateral forums. The leaders expressed optimism that the new phase of partnership would contribute to regional and global stability, benefiting the people of both countries.
