Trent XWB – delivering value through innovation

Trent XWB – value through innovation

For the last three decades, our Civil Aerospace teams have been developing the Trent engine family to push the boundaries of what’s possible in aviation. Year on year, adding more value and efficiency to the world’s air transport industry.

Today, the Trent XWB engine is the fastest-selling widebody engine ever, surpassing 11 million flying hours. Developed as the exclusive power solution to the Airbus A350, the Trent XWB changed civil aviation forever, enabling longer flights, greater passenger comfort and more efficient fuel usage. These perfect partners deliver 25% lower fuel burn and C02 emissions.

The world’s most efficient large aero engine

The sixth in the generation of the engine family, the Trent XWB utilises cutting-edge design and technologies that gives it reliability, versatility and unique range capacity. It currently enables the A350 to fly the world’s longest commercial route.

Its unique three-shaft design, advanced materials and fan system technology all work together to create improved aerodynamics and fuel efficiencies of 15% over the original Trent engine, meaning it can go further with less.

Thanks to these advantages, the A350 was awarded a record-breaking 370 minutes Extended-range Twin-engine Operations Performance Standards (ETOPS) – indicating the distance an aircraft must be from an airport in case of engine failure mid-journey. This means the Trent XWB’s high reliability and performance today allow customer airlines to fly on more direct routes – saving them time, fuel and money.

Extending time on-wing

The Trent XWB engine continues to surpass expectations for time on-wing. By constantly working to incorporate the latest technologies, our teams can improve product components such as turbine blades, equipping them to withstand harsher temperatures and enabling overall longer life.

Through our digital twin, we’re able to analyse vast amounts of engine health data from across our entire fleet and accurately forecast lifecycle and overhaul requirements, as well as simulate fleet operations to optimise design.

In fact, our customer engines that have come in for their first major overhauls have already flown a distance equivalent to more than 350 times around the world.

Proven reliability

After the Trent 700, the Trent XWB is the largest member of our Trent fleet. Today, there are more than 1000 Trent XWBs already in service, with over 900 orders waiting to take to the skies, meaning it will eventually become our primary widebody engine. The Trent XWB is the benchmark engine for efficiency, reliability and performance with more than 1,800 in service or on order.
