India successfully tests MIRV-capable advanced Agni missile over Indian Ocean Region
New Delhi, May 9. India on May 8 carried out a successful flight trial of an advanced Agni missile equipped with a Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island.
During the test, the missile carried multiple payloads aimed at different targets spread across a wide area in the Indian Ocean Region, demonstrating its capability to engage several strategic objectives in a single mission. The entire trajectory – from lift-off to the impact of all payloads – was tracked through an extensive network of ground-based and ship-borne telemetry and tracking stations.
According to officials, the flight data confirmed that all mission parameters were achieved, validating the performance of the MIRV system and the missile’s precision targeting capability.
The missile has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with support from Indian industry partners. The trial was witnessed by senior DRDO scientists and personnel from the Indian Army.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the Army and industry stakeholders on the successful test, stating that the capability would significantly enhance India’s defence preparedness amid evolving security challenges.
