Indian Coast Guard commissions new Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Akshay in Goa
New Delhi, June 27. The Indian Coast Guard on June 27 commissioned ICGS Akshay, a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), at Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa, marking another step in the force’s ongoing modernisation drive and strengthening its maritime security capabilities.
The vessel, whose name means “indestructible”, symbolises the resilience and enduring commitment of the Coast Guard towards protecting India’s maritime interests and ensuring safe, secure and clean seas across the country’s vast maritime domain.
Designed to undertake a broad spectrum of missions, ICGS Akshay will enhance the operational capability of the Indian Coast Guard in areas such as maritime law enforcement, coastal security, search and rescue operations, marine environmental protection and assistance to mariners in distress.
The vessel was commissioned by Parama Sen, Additional Secretary (Personnel) in the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance, in the presence of Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander of Coast Guard Region (West), Inspector General Jyotindra Singh, Deputy Director General (Human Resource Development), and senior officials from the Central and state governments.
Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited, ICGS Akshay represents another milestone for India’s indigenous shipbuilding sector and reflects the government’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) initiative.
The induction of the vessel is expected to further strengthen the country’s domestic shipbuilding ecosystem while boosting the Coast Guard’s ability to respond effectively to emerging maritime security challenges.
