Indian Navy showcases combat strength at spectacular Navy Day operational demo in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram, December 4. The Indian Navy put up a powerful display of its combat readiness and maritime capabilities on December 3 during a grand Operational Demonstration (Op Demo) at Shangumugham beach as part of Navy Day 2025 celebrations. The event, held against the backdrop of India’s expanding maritime role, showcased the force’s growing self-reliance and modernisation.

President of India Droupadi Murmu presided over the ceremony and was received by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. A ceremonial Guard of Honour comprising 150 naval personnel welcomed her on arrival.

The showcase was witnessed by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, senior officials from the Centre and state government, top military leadership, and thousands of local residents who gathered along the shoreline.

More than 20 frontline warships and submarines, including the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, executed coordinated manoeuvres and combat drills. Naval aviation assets and MARCOS commandos also demonstrated high-tempo operations, underscoring the force’s ability to project power across the maritime domain.

The military showcase was complemented by a Hornpipe dance performed by Sea Cadet Corps members, a cultural programme, and a fast-paced Continuity Drill by naval personnel. The festivities concluded with a Beating Retreat by the Naval Band and the traditional sunset ceremony, during which illuminated warships formed a striking silhouette along the coast.

Navy Day commemorates the Indian Navy’s decisive attack on Karachi harbour during Operation Trident in the 1971 war. Reflecting on this legacy, officials highlighted how the Navy has evolved into a modern, resilient force and transitioned from a “buyer’s navy” to a “builder’s navy” under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) programme.

This year’s Op Demo underscored the Navy’s role in supporting a free, open, and rules-based maritime order, echoing India’s vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions). The display reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening maritime partnerships and safeguarding collective security in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
