Delhi Police to use AI-powered smart glasses with facial recognition for Republic Day security
New Delhi, January 22. The Delhi Police will roll out AI-enabled smart glasses fitted with facial recognition technology as part of heightened security measures for the upcoming Republic Day celebrations, officials said.
The wearable devices, linked in real time to police databases, will allow personnel deployed on the ground to instantly identify criminals, proclaimed offenders and suspects, news agency PTI reported. By scanning faces in crowded public spaces, the system can match images with records in the central database within seconds.
Once a match is detected, the smart glasses alert the officer wearing them, enabling swift verification and necessary action without interrupting the movement of the public. Senior officials said the technology will enhance on-the-spot identification while significantly reducing reliance on manual checks.
The use of smart glasses is part of a larger, technology-driven security framework being implemented for Republic Day. The plan also includes widespread CCTV coverage, drone-based surveillance, integration of facial recognition software and AI-powered analytics to monitor crowds and flag suspicious behaviour, officials added.
