Awesome operational display on Navy Day at Visakhapatnam

  • This year, for the first time, Navy Day Celebrations were conducted outside the National Capital.

Visakhapatnam. From MARICOS (marine commandos) slithering down a rope from a Seaking helicopter to secure a beachhead to a MIG-29K displaying its prowess, about 15 ships and 25 aircraft were on view at an operational display by on Navy Day December 4 with President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces as the chief guest.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted all navy personnel and their families on the occasion of Navy Day.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said; “Best wishes on Navy Day to all navy personnel and their families. We in India are proud of our rich maritime history. The Indian Navy has steadfastly protected our nation and has distinguished itself with its humanitarian spirit during challenging times.”

India celebrates December 4 as Navy Day every year to acknowledge the role of the Indian Navy and commemorate its achievements in ‘Operation Trident’ during the 1971 Indo-Pak War.

This year was particularly special as India ushers in the ‘Amrit Kaal’ with the commencement of the celebrations of 75 years of her independence and the Indian Navy demonstrated India’s combat prowess and capability.

Several dignitaries from the Central and State Governments attended the event, which was hosted by Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff.

 

Traditionally, the Navy Day celebrations are conducted at New Delhi in the presence of the President and other dignitaries. This year, for the first time, Navy Day Celebrations were conducted outside the National Capital.

Indian Naval ships, submarines, aircraft and Special Forces from Eastern, Western and Southern Naval Command showcased the capability and versatility of Indian Navy. The event culminated with a sunset ceremony and illumination by ships at anchorage.

The Navy Day celebrations are aimed at fostering greater outreach, renewing maritime consciousness amongst our citizens and highlights the Navy’s contributions towards national security.

Three MIG 29K fighter aircraft firing flares simulating a war situation above the long, magnificent coastline of Visakhapatnam against a crimson sky at dusk was one of the many captivating moments at Ramakrishna Beach. The MIG 29K is part of the air assets onboard INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant aircraft carriers. Four Dornier aircraft flew in formation while six Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers flew in an arrowhead formation as the crowd watched the visual spectacle in awe.

Soon, the silhouetted image of warships anchored along the coast were outlined by bright yellow lights creating a striking image against the evening sky.

The P-8I Poseidon, Indian Navy’s maritime surveillance aircraft, also made a low flypast, capturing the attention of people at the beach. The beach assault mock drill by the MARCOS, dressed in black, battle fatigues and breathtaking feats by para jumpers who slithered down from the sky and landed with perfection on the sands held the spectators captivated.

A Beating Retreat Ceremony by the Indian Navy band and a short musical performance by acclaimed musical trio Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy made for a perfect evening.
