MoD signs ₹811-crore deal with BDL for 160 SAT-SAAW weapons for IAF

New Delhi, Sep 23. The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹810.79-crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force (IAF), in a move aimed at enhancing the force’s precision strike and stand-off attack capabilities.

The contract was signed in New Delhi on September 23 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.

The SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide weapon designed to strike enemy airfield infrastructure from a stand-off range. The weapon can be integrated with multiple IAF platforms, including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30MKI fighter aircraft.

Indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the weapon will have an indigenous content of 60 percent. The programme also envisages the indigenisation of key subsystems, including the Initial Measurement Unit (IMU), Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier.

The Ministry said greater indigenous content and localisation of critical subsystems would further strengthen India’s efforts towards ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence and reduce dependence on foreign sources for key weapon technologies.

Deliveries of the SAT-SAAW systems are scheduled to take place during 2027-28 and 2028-29.

The induction of the weapons is expected to enhance the IAF’s ability to conduct precision strikes against airfield targets from stand-off ranges and strengthen its operational preparedness and overall defence capability.
