Indian Navy showcases maritime heritage and indigenous strength at Republic Day Parade 2026 preview
New Delhi, January 20. The Indian Navy on January 20 held its press preview for the Republic Day Parade (RDP) 2026, offering a detailed glimpse into its marching contingent, tableau, and band that will take part in the national celebrations on Kartavya Path.
Briefing the media, Contingent Commander Lt Karan Nagyal described the Republic Day Parade as a symbol of national unity, reflecting India’s cultural diversity, military strength, and technological progress. He said the Navy’s participation aligns with its vision of being a “Combat Ready, Cohesive and Aatmanirbhar Force” committed to safeguarding the seas in support of a developed and prosperous India.
The Indian Navy’s marching contingent will comprise 144 naval personnel drawn from across the country, representing a cross-section of India’s states and union territories. With an average age of 25 years, the sailors have undergone more than two months of specialised training for the parade. The contingent will be led by Lt Nagyal, with Lt Pawan Kumar Gandi, Lt Priti Kumari, and Lt Varun Dreveriya serving as Platoon Commanders.
The Navy’s tableau for RDP 2026 will depict the theme ‘Strong Navy for a Strong Nation’, highlighting India’s maritime journey from ancient to modern times. It will feature a stitched ship from the 5th century CE, now named INSV Kaundinya, Gurab-class ships of the Maratha Navy, and modern indigenous platforms such as aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, Project 17A Nilgiri-class stealth frigates INS Himgiri and INS Udayagiri, a Kalvari-class submarine, and the GSAT-7R communication satellite.
The tableau will also showcase the circumnavigation route of INSV Tarini during the Navika Sagar Parikrama-II expedition. Naval personnel will be joined by young cadets from the Sea Cadets Corps, a Mumbai-based organisation that imparts basic nautical training to youth. The tableau has been conceptualised by officers from the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.
The Indian Navy Band, comprising 80 musicians and led by M Antony Raj, MCPO Musician First Class, will perform during the Beating the Retreat Ceremony on January 29. The band will present a mix of traditional and contemporary compositions, including dynamic formations, and will feature six women Agniveer musicians.
Vice Admiral Praveen Nair, Controller Personnel Services, said the Navy’s participation goes beyond showcasing military capability and reflects its commitment to self-reliance. He noted that the tableau, themed ‘Anchored in Tradition, Sailing into Self-Reliance and Innovation’, draws inspiration from the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Samudra Se Samridhi’ and highlights the evolution of India’s shipbuilding traditions into a future-ready indigenous force. He also underlined the focus on women empowerment, reflected through the Navika Sagar Parikrama-II expedition and the participation of girls from the Sea Cadets Corps, returning to the Republic Day Parade after several decades.
Ministry of Defence spokesperson Vijay Kumar said the Navy’s press preview marked the start of a series of Republic Day Parade briefings. He said the Indian Air Force will hold its preview on January 22, followed by other departments, while the Indian Army will present its preparations on January 23. He added that the staggered previews allow for a comprehensive understanding of each Service’s role while underscoring jointness, coordination, and integration among the armed forces in the conduct of the national event.
