Putin backs PM’s peace efforts on Ukraine, dismisses US’s ‘Modi’s war’ narrative

Putin countered White House adviser and a top Donald Trump aide Peter Navarro’s claim of Ukraine being “Modi’s war,” instead blaming Nato and “Western interference” for the conflict’s roots.

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised India and China’s efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war at the 25th SCO Heads of State Council summit on Tianjin on Monday, September 1.

Putin countered White House adviser and a top Donald Trump aide Peter Navarro’s claim of Ukraine being “Modi’s war,” instead blaming Nato and “Western interference” for the conflict’s roots.

“In this regard, we highly appreciate the efforts and proposals from China and India aimed at facilitating the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis,” Putin said at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation forum in Tianjin.

Navarro went on to accuse India of fuelling Russia’s war through discounted oil purchases. In an interview with Bloomberg, Navarro had said India would straight away get a 25% reduction in US tariffs if it stopped buying Russian oil.

The top White House official also underscored that the path to peace in Ukraine “runs, in part, through New Delhi”. “I mean, it is essentially Modi’s war because the road to peace runs, in part, through New Delhi,” he said.

Putin also pointed out that his Alaska Summit with Trump last month could pave the way for a solution to the Ukraine crisis.

“I would also note that the understandings reached at the recent Russia–US meeting in Alaska, I hope, also contribute toward this goal.”

Putin’s reference to India’s peace efforts came ahead of his talks with PM Modi, who had spoken with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy before leaving for the summit.

“Thank President Zelenskyy for his phone call today. We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspect, and efforts to restore peace and stability. India extends full support to all efforts in this direction,” PM Modi had posted on X (formerly Twitter) moments after his discussion with the Ukrainian president.

Following Putin’s remarks at the SCO summit, the Russian President left with Prime Minister Modi on his own car to Ritz Carlton for their bilateral.
