Indian Tricolour flies over Seattle’s Space Needle for the first time on Independence Day
Seattle, August 17. Marking a historic first, India’s national flag was hoisted atop Seattle’s iconic Space Needle on the occasion of the country’s 79th Independence Day on August 15. The 605-foot-tall structure, built for the 1962 World Fair and long regarded as a symbol of Seattle’s skyline, became the backdrop for a landmark moment in India–US cultural ties.
The ceremony was led by the Consul General of India in Seattle, alongside Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and other city leaders, who lauded the Indian American community’s role in shaping the Pacific Northwest as a global tech hub.
Later, the Consulate hosted a community reception at Kerry Park, where the flag on the Space Needle was visible against the city’s skyline. The event drew large crowds from the diaspora and featured U.S. dignitaries including Congressman Adam Smith (WA-9), Washington State Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra L. Stephens, and Seattle Parks & Recreation Director AP Diaz. Rep. Smith described the flag-raising as a celebration of Seattle’s diversity and a symbol of the growing bonds between India and the region.
The reception also featured cultural performances, including national anthems, classical dance, and a poetry recital by actor and artist Piyush Mishra.
In a wider tribute, King County and the cities of Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, and Bellevue officially proclaimed August 15 as ‘India Day’. Several landmarks, such as Lumen Field, T-Mobile Park, the Seattle Great Wheel, and the Westin Hotel, were illuminated in the colours of the Indian flag. The tricolour was also raised at the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma City Hall, and at local police and fire department headquarters.
India established its sixth US consulate in Seattle in November 2023, and officials noted that the celebrations reflect the deepening engagement between New Delhi and the Pacific Northwest.
