Captain Hansja Sharma becomes first woman pilot cleared to fly Rudra Helicopter, to lead Army Squadron on Republic Day
New Delhi, January 21. Captain Hansja Sharma has scripted history by becoming the first woman pilot in India to be qualified to fly the Rudra armed helicopter, marking a major milestone for women in the Indian Army’s aviation wing.
Adding to the achievement, Captain Hansja is set to command the 251 Army Aviation Squadron during the Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path, placing her at the helm of one of the Indian Army’s aviation units during one of the country’s most prestigious national ceremonies, according to a post made by the Girls Corner group on their Facebook handle.
An outstanding performer throughout her training, Captain Hansja has consistently excelled in a domain traditionally dominated by men. Her qualification on the Rudra armed helicopter – one of the Indian Army’s frontline combat platforms – underscores her operational capability and professional excellence.
Her leadership role during the Republic Day Parade reflects the Indian Army’s increasing emphasis on inclusivity and its growing confidence in women officers across combat and command roles. While her achievement has come without public fanfare, it carries a powerful message within the armed forces and beyond: competence, courage and leadership transcend gender.
Captain Hansja Sharma’s journey is being seen as an inspiration for young women aspiring to serve in uniform, and as a symbol of the evolving role of women in India’s defence forces.
