Orpheus programme hits major milestone

15 May 2025. Rolls-Royce has achieved a major milestone in its Orpheus programme, successfully completing 100 test events across 20 different engine configurations in three years.

The achievement highlights the agility of the programme and the strength of its rapid learning model – delivering advanced capability at pace, which will change how products and technologies are developed for defence propulsion system programmes including Future Combat Air System (FCAS).

Work on the Orpheus demonstrator is a collaborative effort to explore and validate next-generation twin-spool turbofan technology, transforming the approach to new propulsion system development, particularly for future Autonomous Collaborative Platforms.

By bringing together cross-functional teams and working in partnership with the UK MOD and supply chain, the Orpheus programme is helping to radically reduce the time it takes to design, produce and test new components. The majority of the current Orpheus supply chain are Small or Medium enterprises with some engaging with Defence for the first time, bringing fresh thinking and capabilities.

In just 36 months, the team in Bristol has designed and executed a fast-paced, high-output test campaign that is accelerating innovation and demonstrating how next-generation technology can be matured faster through close collaboration and iterative learning.

Rolls-Royce VP OrpheusWorks – Product Pauli Markkanen said: “In just three years, the Orpheus programme has proven what can be achieved when we combine engineering excellence with a new mindset – one that prioritises agility, learning and collaboration.

“This milestone shows our ability to deliver future propulsion capability at pace and, in addition, we will continue to explore how such activity holds potential value for civil applications through dual-use technologies.”

Harry, the MOD’s Orpheus Technical Lead said: “Orpheus continues to deliver as a catalytic accelerator and breaker of development lifecycle barriers for air propulsion system technologies that can provide greater capability for programmes such as FCAS.

“Since its initiation in 2020, the Orpheus project has demonstrated an effective, agile, trusted and collaborative joint Government and industry initiative that delivers value to defence. It has shown how Rolls-Royce, a world leader in gas turbine technology, can adapt to deliver at greater pace and lower cost. Orpheus is a success story with multiple exploitation opportunities and an example of how we can operate better to deliver for the UK and our allies.”

Each of the 100 test events has moved the programme forward in key areas including:

  • Maturing demonstrator architecture, positioning Rolls-Royce to support a family of products aligned with future Autonomous Collaborative Platforms needs
  • Component feasibility demonstrations, de-risking and accelerating technology readiness that can inform future platforms
  • Novel instrumentation trials, enabling deeper technical insight to inform other programmes

The Orpheus approach not only accelerates Rolls-Royce’s own programmes and supports its grow combat initiative but also provides a model for how innovation can be achieved faster across the wider aerospace industry. It shows how adopting a rapid learning model – with continuous testing, iteration and collaboration – can bring about next-generation capability sooner.

The programme – as well as the wider business – is also supporting the development of critical national skills in areas such as power and propulsion while taking important steps to help grow emerging engineering talent.
