Rolls-Royce Launches Lunar Ambitions at Space Symposium

UK, April 18. Rolls-Royce is exhibiting at the Space Symposium, Colorado for the first time, as its ramp up its dedication to ‘Providing the Power to Explore’ and leverages its extensive nuclear and aerospace pedigree.

As experts in innovation, with more than 60 years of expertise in nuclear power, Rolls-Royce launched the Micro-Reactor concept in 2021, with plans for a first of a kind space model ready by 2029. It is an ambitious and innovative project, with the company’s nuclear pedigree at the forefront.

With support from the UK Space Agency alongside other interested parties, Rolls-Royce is working to bring the Micro-Reactor technology to life, with a variety of power ranges and future application in terrestrial markets. The latest funding from the UK Space Agency of £2.8m means that the Micro-Reactor is closer to reality, as the team now work on developing demonstrators to prove the technology across a range of work packages.

Abi Clayton, Director for Future Programmes at Rolls-Royce said: “The Space Symposium is one of our showcase events for 2023 and one of the key events in the space calendar. We’re really excited to be exhibiting here this year amongst so many other renowned businesses and space agencies.

With the latest tranche of funding from the UK Space Agency, Rolls-Royce is establishing itself as a key new player to the space market. It’s a very exciting time for the Future Programmes team and the development of nuclear power across Rolls-Royce.”

Alongside the Micro-Reactor technology, Rolls-Royce continues to explore and develop future nuclear power options to enable expanded mission capabilities in the space domain, including a sustained human presence on the moon and beyond.

John Shade, Executive Vice President, Business Development and Future Programs for Rolls-Royce North America said: “We’re delighted to be working side-by-side with our colleagues in the UK to showcase Rolls-Royce’s full space ambitions. As we venture forward in this exciting new frontier, it’s more important than ever that we leverage all the capabilities across our closest allies.

We are currently looking at how best we can do this, while building partnerships on a global scale, to ensure Rolls-Royce is a leading collaborator in the space domain.”
