Ministry of Defence signs Rs. 2,095-crore deal with BDL to boost T-90 tank firepower
New Delhi, November 13. In a major step toward enhancing the Indian Army’s armoured warfare capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth Rs. 2,095.70 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of INVAR Anti-Tank Missiles. The deal, concluded under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at South Block, New Delhi, on November 13.
The INVAR missile system, a laser-guided anti-tank weapon, will be integrated with the Indian Army’s T-90 tanks – the backbone of India’s armoured regiments. Known for its high precision and lethality, the missile is capable of neutralising heavily armoured enemy targets with pinpoint accuracy. The induction of these missiles is expected to significantly enhance the combat effectiveness of T-90 tanks and transform the conduct of mechanised operations across varied terrains.
Developed with advanced targeting technology, the INVAR missile enables tank crews to strike enemy armour at extended ranges, ensuring tactical superiority in the battlefield. It provides a force multiplier effect by increasing the T-90’s first-hit probability even under adverse conditions such as poor visibility or electronic countermeasures.
The T-90, often described as the mainstay of India’s armoured fleet, has played a pivotal role in maintaining deterrence along India’s western borders. The tank’s combination of mobility, protection, and firepower has been further augmented through domestic upgrades and integration of indigenous systems in recent years. The addition of the INVAR missile – produced by BDL – will strengthen its capability to deliver decisive firepower in modern, high-intensity conflicts.
The deal exemplifies the government’s commitment to achieving ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence production. By sourcing advanced weapon systems from Indian defence public sector undertakings, the Ministry aims to ensure timely availability of critical equipment while nurturing indigenous manufacturing and technology development.
The partnership with BDL, a key public sector defence manufacturer, also reflects the government’s strategy of leveraging domestic expertise to meet the Indian Army’s operational needs. The Hyderabad-based company has a proven track record in producing guided weapon systems and has been actively engaged in developing technologies that align with India’s long-term defence modernisation plans.
The procurement of INVAR missiles will not only boost the Army’s readiness but also contribute to India’s growing defence industrial base. It will generate employment and skill development opportunities in the domestic defence ecosystem while reducing dependence on imports for advanced munitions.
As the Indian Army continues to modernise its armoured formations to meet emerging security challenges, the new missile system is expected to play a decisive role in maintaining battlefield dominance.
