SITA – Biometric leading the way for paperless air travel

The future of air transport is set to be driven by big techno-trends and practices that will underpin the digital transformation in the industry globally. With the aviation industry being on a high growth trajectory, the role of technology has never been as more critical in transforming air travel as it has become today and will provide real value to help the industry navigate the future. According to IATA, within the next 10 years, India can potentially overtake Germany, Japan, Spain and UK becoming the 3rd largest in the world.

In a hugely interdependent aviation eco-system, the use of innovation smart technologies will bring in profound transformation when integrated into the existing infrastructure are only going to help manage the challenges of rising passenger numbers, limited infrastructure and increased complexity with ease. The only way to handle such unprecedented growth is through adoption of innovative, cutting edge and newer technology which has the potential to create a journey that’s secure, smooth and seamless, from end-to-end not just for the passengers but for the crew as well.

Air travel in India has seen a massive growth over the last few years and will have to increase its infrastructural capability by either building new airports or increase the capacity of its existing airports using innovative technology. Biometric is one such solution which is emerging as the top solution for airlines and airports and will facilitate end-to-end identity management, from booking, through departure and arrival, to the return journey amid rising passenger numbers. It is becoming more commonplace at airports around the world and is delivering secure seamless travel from check-in to boarding. IATA’s latest Global Passenger Survey revealed that 64% of passengers globally would like to use a single biometric travel token for all travel transactions. SITA’s research shows that 70% of passengers in India said they would definitely use biometrics if given the option, removing the need to show a passport or boarding card at key points at airports. Over the next 20 years, use of digital technologies to improve service, operations and efficiency will have profound effects on the air transport industry. Airlines and airports are already investing in various forms of biometric technology and SITA’s report explores innovative ID management programs that are transforming the travel experience today. In the future, these will be more commonplace worldwide as 63% of airports and 43% of airlines plan to invest in biometric ID management solutions in the next three years.
