Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad takes charge as AFMC Director and Commandant
Pune, September 1. Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad, VSM, has assumed charge as the new Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.
A graduate of AFMC, Honwad completed his MBBS from the institution in 1989 and obtained his MD in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine in 1998. He subsequently undertook a WHO fellowship in Neuro-Anaesthesiology at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru.
He is also an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, where he was awarded an M.Phil in Public Administration.
With more than 37 years of service, Surgeon Vice Admiral Honwad has held several senior academic, clinical and administrative positions in the Armed Forces Medical Services. His previous assignments include Additional Director General Medical Services (Navy) at Naval Headquarters, as well as Commanding Officer of Indian Naval Hospitals Ship (INHS) Sanjivani and INHS Asvini.
Before taking over as AFMC Director and Commandant, he served in these senior leadership roles within the Navy’s medical establishment.
Honwad is also a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH), USA. He has represented the field as an international speaker on healthcare simulation at several national and international conferences.
In recognition of his distinguished service and commitment to patient care, he was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2025. He has also received the Chief of Naval Staff Commendation on two occasions, in 2006 and 2013, besides commendations from the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (South) in 2007 and the FOC-in-C (West) in 2011.
