Pakistan launches fourth Hangor-class submarine built by China
New Delhi, December 18. Pakistan on December 17 launched the fourth submarine in its Hangor-class programme, named PNS Ghazi, marking another step forward in the Pakistan Navy’s modernisation drive under its defence cooperation with China.
The submarine was launched at China’s Shuangliu Base, according to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). Built by China under a transfer-of-technology agreement, the vessel is part of an eight-submarine deal signed between Islamabad and Beijing to enhance Pakistan’s undersea warfare capabilities.
The launch ceremony, held in Wuhan, was attended by senior officials from both countries, highlighting the deepening defence partnership between Pakistan and China. Under the agreement, four Hangor-class submarines are being constructed in China, while the remaining four are to be built in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Limited with Chinese technical support.
The military said the Hangor-class submarines will be equipped with advanced weapons and sensors capable of engaging targets at extended stand-off ranges, adding that the platform would play a key role in maintaining regional peace and stability.
With the launch of PNS Ghazi, all four submarines being built in China are now undergoing sea trials and are in the final stages before delivery to the Pakistan Navy, the ISPR said.
The first submarine of the class was launched in April 2024, followed by the second and third on March 15 and August 15 this year, respectively. Named after the historic PNS Hangor, the class comprises diesel-electric attack submarines fitted with air-independent propulsion technology, enabling longer underwater endurance and extended operational reach.
