‘Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth Takes Charge as Vice Chief of Army Staff
New Delhi. Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth on April 1, 2026 assumed charge as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), bringing with him nearly four decades of extensive operational and strategic experience.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Over the years, he has built a distinguished career with service across diverse terrains, including significant counter-insurgency experience.
During his career, he has commanded an armoured regiment in the desert sector, an armoured brigade in a developed sector, and a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir. After being promoted to Lieutenant General, he commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps and later served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, overseeing several major national and international engagements.
At the Army Commander level, Lt Gen Seth held key positions as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of both South Western Command and Southern Command, earning the rare distinction of leading two operational commands along the western front.
He has also held several important staff and strategic roles, including Brigade Major in Jammu and Kashmir, Operations Officer with a United Nations mission in Angola, Assistant Military Secretary at Army Headquarters, and Director General of Discipline, Ceremonial and Welfare.
Lt Gen Seth has played a significant srole in capability development and modernisation within the Army, contributing to long-term strategic planning and acquisition processes. His work has been instrumental in shaping the Army’s modernisation roadmap.
Academically, he has excelled in military training institutions, securing top positions in multiple courses. He stood first in the Junior Command Course and was awarded the Best All-Round Student Officer Medal at the Defence Services Staff College. He has also attended the Higher Command Course, the National Defence College, and the Command and Staff Course in Paris.
