PM Modi wraps up successful Brunei visit, lands in Singapore

New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up a highly successful two-day visit to Brunei on September 4 and landed in Singapore on the next leg of his tour. This was the first-ever bilateral trip by an Indian PM to the southeast Asian nation. The PM was visiting at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. As a special gesture, PM Modi was received in Brunei Darussalam by the Crown Prince, Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.

During his visit, the PM met the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah. After the bilateral meet, the prime minister said the two countries will focus on mutual cooperation in agriculture, industry, pharma and health as well as technology and cyber security. “In the field of space, we have agreed on satellite development, remote sensing and training. Direct linkage will be started soon for connectivity between the two countries,” PM Modi said.

The PM also visited the renowned Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei which is regarded as one of the most iconic structures in the region. This was shortly after the PM inaugurated a new Chancery of the Indian High Commission.

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei – the father of the current Sultan, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, who is considered as the Architect of Modern Brunei.

After the launch of the new Chancery, a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said that “The chancery complex embodies a profound sense of Indianness, masterfully integrating traditional motifs and lush tree plantations. The use of elegant claddings and durable Kota stones further enhances its aesthetic appeal, harmoniously blending classic and contemporary elements. The design not only pays homage to India’s rich cultural heritage but also creates a tranquil and inviting atmosphere.”

PM Modi also interacted with the local community members who had gathered in large numbers to meet the PM. It has today become a hallmark of the PM’s foreign policy that he meets and interacts with members of the Indian diaspora in whichever nation he visits.

In a post on X, the official spokesperson of the MEA said, “Building stronger India-Brunei relations. PM @narendramodi was warmly welcomed at the Istana Nurul Iman by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and his close family members. Brunei is an important partner in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and its Vision of the Indo-Pacific.”

The PM is now in Singapore which is the last and second leg of his tour to SE Asia. It is a significant visit and a slew of agreements are expected to be announced.
