Indo-Russian JV Hands Over 35,000 AK-203 Rifles to Indian Army
New Delhi, August 20. The Indo-Russian joint venture, Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), has completed the delivery of 35,000 AK-203 assault rifles to the Indian Army, marking a significant step in India’s efforts to boost indigenous defence production.
The rifles, produced at IRRPL’s facility in India, are the latest iteration of the Kalashnikov AK-200 series, chambered for the 7.62×39 mm cartridge. Known for their reliability and ease of maintenance, the AK-203s are tailored to meet the operational needs of the Indian Army.
IRRPL was set up with participation from Russia’s state arms exporter Rosoboronexport and the Kalashnikov Group – both subsidiaries of the Rostec State Corporation – alongside Indian stakeholders.
Rostec chief Sergey Chemezov highlighted that India is the first foreign nation to manufacture the “200-series” Kalashnikovs, underlining the initiative’s alignment with ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. The project involves full technology transfer and a roadmap for complete localization of production.
“The AK-203 programme reflects the trend of localised arms production and demonstrates Russia’s strength as a reliable defence partner,” Chemezov said.
The rifles are built in India using exclusive Russian technology on certified equipment, ensuring high quality and adherence to international standards.
