The UN Security Council “strongly” condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers behind the dastardly incident to account. In a statement issued on Saturday, 26 April, the UNSC members expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms constitutes one of the “most serious threats” to international peace and security.

“The members of the UN Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice. They stressed that those responsible for these killings should be held accountable, and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard,” the UNSC statement read.

It added that the members of the Security Council reiterate that any acts of terrorism are “criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed”.

“They reaffirmed the need for all States to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts,” the statement concluded.

Pahalgam terror attack

On April 22, 26 people were shot dead in Jammu and Kashmir‘s Pahalgam – one of the worst attacks in the Valley since 2019. Terrorists came into the Baisaran Valley grassland, dubbed ‘Mini Switzerland’, and started firing at tourists gathered around eateries, taking pony rides or just picnicking, officials and eyewitnesses said. The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow group of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
