India, China review border situation at WMCC talks in Beijing
The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Chinese side was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of China’s foreign ministry.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions were “constructive and forward looking”, with both countries acknowledging progress in maintaining stability in the border areas, which has helped advance the gradual normalisation of bilateral ties.
The two sides also discussed issues related to boundary delimitation, border management, institutional mechanisms and cross-border cooperation. India emphasised the need for an early meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on Trans-Border Rivers.
Both countries agreed to continue regular diplomatic and military-level exchanges through existing consultation mechanisms, including those agreed upon during the 24th round of Special Representatives’ talks.
The two sides further decided to work towards substantive preparations for the next meeting of the Special Representatives, which is scheduled to be held in China.
During the visit, Sujit Ghosh also met Liu Jinsong, Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs in the Chinese foreign ministry, and paid a courtesy call on Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei.
