Indian Navy receives Survey Vessel (Large) Sanshodhak from GRSE
New Delhi, March 31. The Indian Navy on March 30 took delivery of Sanshodhak, the fourth and final Survey Vessel (Large) in its class, built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd in Kolkata. The vessel is the last survey ship designed under the stewardship of the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.
The contract for four Survey Vessel (Large) ships was signed in October 2018. The earlier vessels in the series – INS Sandhayak, INS Nirdeshak and INS Ikshak – were commissioned between February 2024 and November 2025.
Built in accordance with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping, Sanshodhak is designed for extensive coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys, including charting port and harbour approaches and mapping navigational channels, according to aa statement issued by the Ministry of Defence on March 31. The ship will also gather oceanographic and geophysical data for both defence and civilian applications.
With a displacement of about 3,400 tonnes and an overall length of 110 metres, Sanshodhak is equipped with advanced hydrographic systems such as a data acquisition and processing suite, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, a Remotely Operated Vehicle, DGPS-based long-range positioning systems and a digital side-scan sonar. Powered by twin diesel engines, the vessel can achieve speeds exceeding 18 knots.
The keel of Sanshodhak was laid in June 2022 and the ship was launched in June 2023. It subsequently underwent an extensive series of harbour and sea trials before delivery.
Featuring more than 80 percent indigenous content by cost, the vessel underscores the government’s push for ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) in complex shipbuilding and reflects the collaborative efforts of Indian industry, MSMEs and multiple stakeholders in strengthening India’s maritime capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.
