His command experience includes leading troops in the Siachen Glacier region, as well as commanding an armoured regiment, an independent armoured brigade, an armoured division and the Desert Corps. These assignments provided him extensive experience in operational planning and the conduct of complex, multi-domain military operations across diverse theatres.

Apart from command responsibilities, Lt Gen Malhotra has held several important staff appointments involving operational planning, military intelligence, logistics, personnel management, technology integration and strategic communications.

A highly accomplished military professional, Lt Gen Malhotra holds two master’s degrees in Defence Studies, including one from King’s College London, along with two MPhil degrees in Political Science and in Defence and Strategic Studies. He is also an alumnus of the Advanced Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom, the Higher Air Command Course and the National Defence College.
