UN/ Bengaluru, April 8, 2026. Following the announcement of a ceasefire between the US and Iran, the United Nations is calling on all parties to adhere to the agreement. This is necessary “to pave the way toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region”, UN spokesperson said.
UN secretary general António Guterres welcomes the two-week ceasefire, and has called on “all the parties to the current conflict in the Middle East to comply with their obligations under international law”.
Iran and the US reached the ceasefire on Tuesday, April 7 night, shortly before the expiry of an ultimatum issued by US President Donald Trump. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the 10-point plan put forward by Iran offers a “workable basis on which to negotiate”.
Iran’s military will coordinate passage of vessels through the critical Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire, the country’s Foreign minister said. Trump said reopening the strait was a key condition of the ceasefire deal.
“Israel supports President Trump’s decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks subject to Iran immediately opening the straits and stopping all attacks on the US, Israel and countries in the region,” a statement said. “The two-weeks ceasefire does not include Lebanon.”
Ceasefire between Iran and US takes effect ‘immediately’.
The temporary ceasefire between Iran, the United States and “their allies” comes into effect immediately.
