GE Aerospace Ushers in a New Era with Historic Hybrid-Electric Flight Across the Atlantic

Collaboration between GE Aerospace, NASA, Boeing, Beta Technologies, Rolls-Royce and several government and industry partners

The Farnborough International Airshow opened on a different note this year. Instead of the customary barrage of aircraft orders and commercial announcements, the spotlight shifted to what could become one of the defining moments in aviation’s journey towards sustainable flight. The company’s Flying Test Bed, a specially modified Boeing 747-400 featuring a new livery, is on static display at the Farnborough International Airshow.

GE Aerospace announced the successful completion of the world’s first hybrid-electric transatlantic flight, a milestone that Mohamed Ali, President and CEO of Commercial Engines & Services at GE Aerospace, described as the beginning of “a new age of hybrid-electric aviation.”

“We are proud to say we did it,” Ali told delegates at the airshow. “We flew hybrid-electric for the first time in this industry. The world and the aviation industry have entered a new age of hybrid-electric flight powered by GE Aerospace technology.” The achievement marks the transition of hybrid-electric propulsion from laboratory research to real-world flight operations, demonstrating that the technology is capable of supporting future commercial aviation applications.

The announcement comes four years after GE Aerospace unveiled another industry first at the Farnborough Airshow, when it successfully demonstrated a megawatt-class hybrid-electric propulsion system inside NASA’s Electric Aircraft Test Bed at the Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Ohio. At the time, the system was tested under simulated flight conditions equivalent to an altitude of 45,000 feet, validating the concept in a controlled environment.

“Simulation has now given way to a real-world demonstration,” Ali said. “The aircraft crossed the Atlantic using hybrid-electric propulsion, representing multiple world firsts—the first hybrid-electric flight across the Atlantic and the first transatlantic crossing with hybrid-electric technology.” According to Ali, this was far more than an experimental exercise. “This is not a laboratory experiment or a one-off prototype,” he said.

High-performance Hybrid-Electric Propulsion

“We flew a high-performance hybrid-electric propulsion system built with durable, flight-quality hardware. It demonstrates technology capable of helping future aircraft reach commercial aviation.” The aircraft employed a sophisticated propulsion architecture combining a conventional gas turbine engine with electric motors and advanced battery systems. During the transatlantic journey, the hybrid-electric boost system provided additional power during the climb phase, enabling the aircraft to reach higher altitudes more efficiently while reducing fuel consumption. During descent, the batteries were recharged, validating the aircraft’s energy-management capability and highlighting one of the key operational advantages of hybrid-electric propulsion.

Ali explained that the demonstration validates hybrid-electric propulsion as a practical pathway for future regional and single-aisle commercial aircraft, where efficiency improvements and emissions reductions are increasingly becoming industry priorities. “There are several non-obvious benefits of hybridisation,” he noted. “Additional electric power during take-off and climb allows aircraft to reach cruising altitude faster, improving overall efficiency while also providing important operational and safety advantages.”

Crossing the Atlantic: A Milestone

Behind the technical achievement lies years of engineering effort and countless hours of testing. Ali recalled three particularly emotional milestones during the programme that underscored the significance of the achievement. “The first was watching the aircraft’s maiden flight on May 3. Years of hard work finally came together, and there wasn’t a dry eye among many members of the team,” he said. “The second milestone came later in May when the aircraft successfully flew using hybrid-electric propulsion. The third was watching the aircraft cross the Atlantic and engage hybrid boost to achieve altitude and range that would not have been possible using a conventional gas turbine alone.”

For the engineering team, those moments represented the culmination of years of research, development and perseverance. Christine, GE Aerospace’s Hybrid Electric Programme Leader, said the programme has evolved steadily since its first public demonstration four years ago. “Since announcing the laboratory test, we’ve relentlessly tested the system, improved the flight-quality hardware and validated every aspect of its operation,” she said. “The aircraft performed exactly as expected throughout the flight-test campaign.”

She noted that the programme progressed remarkably smoothly, with each successive flight establishing new benchmarks for endurance, altitude and system performance. “Day after day we came in and broke our own records for flight time, flight duration and altitude. It gave tremendous confidence that the technology was maturing exactly as we had hoped.”

The hybrid-electric flight also represents a major milestone for GE Aerospace’s Hybrid Electric Flight Demonstration (HEFT) programme, which is focused on developing megawatt-class propulsion systems for the next generation of commercial aircraft. Data collected during the flight campaign will be used to refine the propulsion system further, support certification activities and accelerate commercial deployment.

“Our flight-test results show that GE Aerospace is delivering on its commitment,” Ali said. “We are advancing new technologies through rigorous ground and flight testing and turning innovation into real-world capabilities for the aviation industry.”

The programme has been developed through close collaboration between GE Aerospace, NASA, Boeing, Beta Technologies, Rolls-Royce and several government and industry partners. “Innovation is a team sport,” Ali remarked. “Achievements like this never happen alone. This milestone reflects strong collaboration across industry and government, and we are proud of what has been accomplished together.”

GE Aerospace Chairman and CEO H. Lawrence Culp Jr. reinforced the company’s long-term commitment to developing future propulsion technologies. “At GE Aerospace, our focus is on delivering for our customers today while investing in the technologies that will shape the future of flight,” he said.

The aircraft continues to serve as GE Aerospace’s primary platform for testing and validating next-generation engine technologies under real operating conditions. The successful hybrid-electric transatlantic flight is widely regarded as one of the most significant advances in sustainable aviation in recent years. While considerable work remains before hybrid-electric propulsion enters commercial service, the demonstration provides compelling evidence that the technology is moving steadily toward certification and eventual deployment. If successfully scaled for commercial operations, hybrid-electric propulsion has the potential to reduce fuel consumption, lower airline operating costs, decrease carbon emissions and support the aviation industry’s long-term sustainability objectives, bringing the sector one step closer to cleaner, quieter and more efficient air travel.
