India, Poland seek to deepen trade and technology cooperation

By Aroonim Bhuyan

New Delhi, Nov 4. Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada visited Poland on November 2-3, accompanied by a delegation representing 12 Indian companies, to explore opportunities for expanding bilateral trade, investment and cooperation in emerging technologies.

The visit followed Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s visit to India last month and reflected the growing momentum in bilateral engagement following the elevation of India-Poland relations to a Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Poland in 2024.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, during the visit, Prasada held discussions with Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski on strengthening cooperation in emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, data centres and cybersecurity.

In a separate meeting with Ignacy Niemczycki, Secretary of State in Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister discussed opportunities for expanding economic engagement in the context of the forthcoming India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Prasada highlighted the potential for greater collaboration in agri-technology and food processing and called for creating additional opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in both countries.

His discussions with Poland’s Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Technology, Michal Baranowski, focused on expanding cooperation in critical minerals, semiconductors and start-up partnerships. Prasada highlighted the investment and manufacturing opportunities offered by India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and emphasised the need to promote joint development and production, backed by technology transfer.

On November 3, Prasada delivered the opening address at the India-Poland Business Forum organised at the Polish National Chamber of Commerce (KIG) in Warsaw. Calling for stronger engagement between businesses in the two countries, he urged Indian and Polish companies to tap the full potential of bilateral trade and investment through new business opportunities, partnerships and deeper economic cooperation.

He also underlined the opportunities expected to emerge from the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and encouraged companies to leverage the agreement to expand market access, increase trade and investment flows and identify new areas of collaboration.

During the visit, the Minister interacted with members of the Indian business community in Poland and acknowledged their contribution to strengthening economic and people-to-people ties. He also held discussions with prospective Polish investors to explore avenues for attracting greater investment into India.

As part of his industry engagements, Prasada visited Transition Technologies, a Polish IT and software engineering company, and WB Electronics, a Polish defence company, both of which have business interests in India.

The visit underscored India’s commitment to further strengthening its economic partnership with Poland, including cooperation in advanced technologies, manufacturing, investment and resilient global supply chains. It also provided an opportunity to deepen economic engagement within the broader framework of the India-EU strategic partnership.
