Indian Navy chief visits Myanmar to deepen maritime cooperation and training ties
Naypyidaw, May 2. Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, has begun a four-day official visit to Myanmar from May 2 to 5, aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation and operational linkages between the two navies.
During the visit, Admiral Tripathi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with senior Myanmar military leaders, including General Ye Win Oo, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces; General U Htun Aung, Myanmar’s Defence Minister; and Admiral Htein Win, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Navy.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the discussions are expected to review ongoing maritime cooperation, enhance operational-level engagement, and explore new avenues for collaboration.
The Indian Navy chief will also visit key Myanmar naval establishments, including the Central Naval Command, Naval Training Command, and No. 1 Fleet. As part of the itinerary, he will lay a wreath at the Myanmar Armed Forces Fallen Heroes’ War Memorial, underscoring the ceremonial and historical aspects of the engagement.
Talks during the visit will focus on maritime security, capacity building, capability enhancement, and training cooperation. India and Myanmar maintain regular naval engagement through mechanisms such as defence cooperation meetings, staff talks, training exchanges, and joint operational activities.
These include the India-Myanmar Naval Exercise (IMNEX) and the Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrol (IMCOR), along with port visits and hydrographic surveys. Myanmar has also been a regular participant in major Indian Navy initiatives and multilateral maritime forums such as the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, MILAN, the International Fleet Review, the Goa Maritime Conclave, IOS SAGAR, and the Admiral’s Cup.
The visit underscores the longstanding friendship between India and Myanmar, built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to maritime security and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
