INS Sudarshini concludes Antigua visit, strengthens India-Caribbean maritime ties
New Delhi, June 3. Indian Navy sailing vessel INS Sudarshini has concluded a four-day port call at Antigua, marking a significant step in India’s maritime engagement with Caribbean nations under the ongoing Lokayan 26 expedition.
The ship departed Antigua on May 31 after a visit aimed at deepening maritime cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties between India and Antigua and Barbuda.
During the port call, INS Sudarshini hosted several high-profile visitors, including Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne. The ship’s Commanding Officer also held discussions with Telbert Benjamin, Chief of Defence Staff of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF), underscoring efforts to enhance defence and maritime collaboration between the two countries.
Professional interactions and exchanges between personnel of the Indian Navy and the ABDF helped strengthen operational linkages and foster mutual understanding. The vessel was also opened to visitors, offering members of the public an opportunity to experience the Indian Navy’s rich maritime heritage and sail-training traditions.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the visit highlighted India’s commitment to building enduring maritime partnerships and promoting goodwill across the region in line with its MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision and the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The World is One Family).
Following its departure from Antigua, INS Sudarshini is scheduled to sail to the United States, where it will participate in the International Naval Review and the SAIL 250 celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The Antigua port call forms part of India’s broader maritime diplomacy efforts through the Lokayan 26 expedition, which seeks to expand engagement with partner nations while showcasing the country’s maritime traditions and commitment to international cooperation.
