New Delhi. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on August 6 described the Territorial Army as a vital force in advancing the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), highlighting its dual role in national security and nation-building during a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi.
The meeting, chaired by the Defence Minister, focused on the role and functioning of the Territorial Army. Senior ministry officials gave a detailed presentation on the force’s mandate, operational responsibilities and achievements, while members of the committee offered suggestions aimed at further strengthening its capabilities and improving its effectiveness.
Addressing the meeting, Singh said the Territorial Army represents the true spirit of the “Citizen-Soldier” concept, with its personnel balancing civilian professions while remaining prepared to defend the nation’s borders and assist in maintaining internal security whenever required.
He noted that the force serves as an important reserve, providing trained manpower that can be mobilised at short notice to augment the regular armed forces during emergencies. According to him, personnel returning to civilian life after their service also help strengthen the bond between the military and society by encouraging young people to join the armed forces.
The Defence Minister said the Territorial Army, with a strength of around 44,400 personnel organised into 59 units, has consistently played a crucial role as a first responder during natural disasters. He praised its relief, rescue and medical assistance efforts during the Kerala floods, the Odisha cyclone and the recent floods in Assam.
Singh also commended the Territorial Army’s contribution to environmental conservation through its Ecological Task Forces, which have planted nearly 100 million saplings with an estimated survival rate of 80 to 85 percent. He said the initiative supports the government’s environmental objectives, including the Prime Minister’s Mission LiFE and Panchamrit commitments.
He further appreciated the force’s role in promoting the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign in Jammu and Kashmir.
Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and other senior officials attended the meeting.
