Mumbai. Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan on May 30 assumed charge as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Western Naval Command, one of the Indian Navy’s most strategically significant operational commands, at a ceremonial parade held in Mumbai.
Before taking over his new responsibilities, the officer paid tribute to personnel who laid down their lives in service of the nation by laying a wreath at the Gaurav Stambh memorial at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
Vice Admiral Vatsayan succeeds to the command after serving as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters in New Delhi, where he oversaw key aspects of capability development and future force readiness of the Indian Navy.
A specialist in gunnery and missile systems, the Flag Officer was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988, after graduating from the National Defence Academy. Over a naval career spanning more than 38 years, he has held a wide range of operational, command, staff and training appointments both at sea and ashore.
His sea-going assignments include command of Coast Guard Ship C-05, missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, missile corvette INS Kuthar and guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri. He has served aboard several frontline warships and has been closely associated with operational deployments and maritime security missions.
Vice Admiral Vatsayan is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, the Naval War College and the National Defence College. During his career, he has held important policy and planning appointments at Naval Headquarters, including as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) after promotion to flag rank.
His senior leadership assignments have included commanding the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, serving as Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command and Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy. He also held key tri-service appointments at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff as Deputy Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (Operations) and later as Deputy Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (Policy, Plans and Force Development).
In these roles, he played an important part in enhancing jointness among the three armed services, coordinating military operations, shaping force development plans and advancing policies aimed at strengthening defence indigenisation.
As the 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff prior to his latest appointment, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was responsible for steering the Navy’s modernisation efforts and long-term capability enhancement programmes.
For his distinguished service, he has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Nao Sena Medal. His appointment comes at a time when the Western Naval Command continues to play a critical role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests in the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.
