ISRO’s Analog Space Mission at Ladakh and its aim

By R Anil Kumar

Bengaluru, October 5. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in its effort to achieve success in its first human Spaceflight  Programme is conducting an “analog mission” on Earth which will take place in Ladakh.

The analog mission at Ladakh is part of Gaganyaan Programme to prepare astronauts for India’s first human Spaceflight.

This mission will replicate Space conditions such as isolation and confinement to study physical, mental and operational challenges ensuring astronauts’ readiness for Space.

Analog Space Mission: This Mission will help Scientists observe the Physical, Mental and Operational conditions of Space, while remaining on Earth. The Mission will include isolation, confinement and limited communication.

Analog missions are important because they let Scientists explore Space environments and test physiological, psychological and technical issues.

The Analog mission focuses on preparing astronauts for long duration Space exploration, life support, human adaptability and emergency strategies. This mission is part of ISRO’s Gaganyaan Programme which aims to send astronauts to Low-Earth Orbit for several days. By conducting Analog Space Mission, ISRO can train astronauts and help them be well prepared and equipped for emergencies.

Aim of Analog Mission: *Human Performance- This Mission aims to train astronauts for Space Missions. When an astronaut goes to space, they face many unique challenges such as microgravity, isolation and confinement. The Analog Mission helps ISRO to study and observe astronaut performance.

Testing: The Gaganyaan Mission is another milestone mission for ISRO . Before taking up human Spaceflight Programme, the Analog mission aims to test the Spaceflight and address any challenges that are to be overcome during the mission.

Preparedness: This Mission aims to prepare astronauts for mental resilience. The isolation in Ladakh will help study the psychological effects of isolation and limited social interaction, strengthening astronauts mental endurance.

Reason for Choosing Ladakh as the prime location for the mission- The Indian Space Agency ISRO has chosen Ladakh as the site for Analog Mission for several reasons. Ladakh’s climate, environment and geography make it an ideal place as it closely resembles the conditions of a lunar or martian environment.

Ladakh has been chosen for its extreme environment, high altitudes, low oxygen levels and extreme cold conditions. Its challenging atmosphere allows Scientists to test human psychological and environmental adaptability of astronauts.

The isolation experience in Ladakh is similar to that in Space, helping astronauts and Scientists predict the effects of long-term isolation on a Space mission.

The Government of India has invested hugely in Ladakh to make it a site for Space Missions and  accessible by providing logistic support to ensure smooth operations.

Analog missions are widely recognised by Space Agencies, worldwide as vital field tests that simulate the challenges of Space. These simulatons are crucial for evaluating technologies, habitats, communication systems and crew dynamics in conditions similar to deep space. Such missions also provide unique opportunities to study human and robotic responses to extreme environments, a critical factor for long duration space missions.

ISRO’s Analog Mission in Ladakh positions India at the forefront of preparatory research for future deep-space explorations.

Lying at an elevation over 3000 meters above sea-level, Ladakh has oxygen levels of only 40 percent of those at sea-level. The low pressure and low oxygen setting allows researchers to evaluate life support systems under conditions similar to the lunar and martian environment.

The month-long mission comes in the wake of India’s plans to set up lunar habitats, which could provide a base to launch interplanetary missions.
