Cessna aircraft suffers runway excursion during training exercise in Maharashtra’s Baramati

New Delhi, August 9. A Cessna C172 aircraft operated by a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)-approved flying training organisation suffered a runway excursion at Baramati Airfield in Maharashtra on August 9, with no injuries or fatalities reported.

The incident involving aircraft VT-SEX, operated by the Academy of Carver Aviation, occurred at around 12:25 pm on August 9 while the aircraft was being used for a Circuit and Landing Emergencies training exercise.

The aircraft was under the command of Flight Instructor Capt. Chirag Shashikant Doifode, with trainee Abhijeet Jundre on board, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The aircraft taxied out at around 12:09 pm for the scheduled training sortie. As part of the exercise, it entered the runway through Link Bravo and positioned at the threshold of Runway 29, where a rejected take-off drill was conducted. It subsequently lined up at the threshold of Runway 11 for another rejected take-off exercise.

During the training, the aircraft was unable to stop within the paved portion of the runway and veered off the extended paved surface beyond the threshold of Runway 29 towards the right, resulting in the runway excursion.

The aircraft suffered preliminary damage to its propeller, engine cowling and nose landing gear. A detailed assessment of the damage will be conducted by the competent authorities.

The DGCA’s Air Safety team is travelling to the site to carry out a preliminary investigation and determine the circumstances and factors that led to the incident.

The Ministry said further details would be released after the information is verified by the authorities.
