Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan appointed next Chief of the Naval Staff

New Delhi, May 9. The government has appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of the Naval Staff, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who will retire on May 31, 2026.

Currently serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, a position he assumed on July 31, 2025, Vice Admiral Swaminathan brings nearly four decades of operational, training, and staff experience to the Navy’s top post. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, he is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare.

An alumnus of premier military institutions including the National Defence Academy, the Joint Services Command and Staff College, the College of Naval Warfare, and the United States Naval War College, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service.

Over the course of his career, he has commanded several frontline warships, including missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. His operational commands also extended to leading the Western Fleet, often referred to as the “Sword Arm” of the Navy.

As a Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, where he played a key role in strengthening naval training. He was also instrumental in establishing the Indian Naval Safety Team to oversee operational safety across the force. He later headed the Navy’s Work Up Organisation as Flag Officer Sea Training and went on to serve as Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Advisor on Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India.

After being promoted to Vice Admiral, he held key appointments including Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, Controller of Personnel Services, and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters. Prior to his current command, he served as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan’s academic credentials include a BSc from Jawaharlal Nehru University, an MSc in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, an MA in Defence Studies from King’s College London, an MPhil in Strategic Studies, and a PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University.
