From Sepoy to Lieutenant: Gurmukh Singh’s seventh attempt turns perseverance into commission
New Delhi, December 14. For 32-year-old Gurmukh Singh, failure was never an endpoint – only a milestone on a longer journey of perseverance.
After completing Class 12, Singh joined the Indian Army as a sepoy, driven by a singular ambition: to earn a commission as an officer. The road was far from smooth. He appeared repeatedly for officer entry examinations, facing rejection time after time. Yet, each setback only strengthened his resolve.
While serving in demanding locations, including Ladakh, Singh continued to invest in himself academically. From a school graduate, he went on to earn a postgraduate degree and a B.Ed, carefully balancing military duties with rigorous preparation for the examinations.
On December 13, that determination finally bore fruit at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun. As his family looked on with pride, Singh was commissioned as an officer on his seventh attempt, donning the uniform of a Lieutenant in the Army Air Defence (AAD) Corps, The Times of India reported.
“Every time I failed, I informed my father, and he never once lost faith in me,” the report quoted Lieutenant Singh as saying. “He always encouraged me to try again until I achieved my goal.”
Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged the challenges of preparing while on active duty.
“I was posted in various border areas, and there were days when I couldn’t focus on my goal at all,” he said, underscoring the perseverance that ultimately turned his long-held dream into reality.
