India imports LPG from several countries, including the US; Supply normal in the country: Centre

New Delhi, March 17, 2026. The central government said on March 17, that India has started importing LPG from several countries, including the US. It also said that supplies in the country remain normal and there have been no reports of gas shortages from any LPG distributor.

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary for Marketing and Oil Refinery at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said during a press briefing that most of the LPG is coming from Gulf countries. “Our oil companies have started sourcing LPG from the US,” Sharma said. “The government is also making every effort to diversify its sources of LPG.”

“We are getting more crude oil today because of increased diversification.” Commercial LPG supplies have also partially resumed as states resume distribution. Alternative fuels like kerosene and coal have also been introduced to ease pressure on domestic LPG demand, she added.

Sharma said that panic-induced demand is easing and bookings are declining. “On March 13, bookings were recorded at 8.9 million, which have dropped to 7 million today,” he said, adding that LPG refill delivery rates are the same as before the conflict and urged consumers to avoid hoarding and black-market purchases.

According to the ministry, fuel availability remains stable, with refineries operating at full capacity and adequate stocks of petrol and diesel. Sharma said, “There is no fuel shortage at any LPG distributor, and supplies to consumers are continuing smoothly.” Additionally, the shift to digital platforms has improved bookings.

Meanwhile, the Indian-flagged LPG tanker ‘Nanda Devi’ arrived at the Vadinar port in Gujarat on Tuesday, becoming the second LPG carrier to reach the west coast this week, after ‘Shivalik’ arrived at the Mundra port a day earlier.

Both ships were carrying vital LPG supplies to India after navigating the extremely risky Strait of Hormuz, where maritime traffic has been disrupted due to the ongoing conflict between Iran, the US, and Israel.
