CDS Gen. Anil Chauhan Emphasizes Cyber Defence Prowess at ‘Exercise Cyber Suraksha -2024’

By R Anil Kumar

  • CDS Gen Anil Chauhan attends Exercise Cyber Suraksha – 2024

  • A more connected defence and intelligence world means that war-fighters receive more information faster and more accurately than ever

  • However, this increased connectivity also means that there are more opportunities for cyberattacks, data leaks and other IT security breaches. This is the issue at the crux of modern cybersecurity issues: Developments in technology also mean new tools and strategies to protect our critical networks.

  • The goal of this conference is to develop a program that will help cyber defence professionals defend legacy and cloud networks, protect connected weapons systems, thwart bad actors in their tracks and ultimately support our armed forces on the ground, says CDS Gen Anil Chauhan

New Delhi, May 22. At a time where the lines between the digital realm and physical warfare are becoming increasingly blurred, the role of cybersecurity in the defence sector has never been more critical.

Today’s defence landscape is a far cry from traditional warfare. Today our on-the-ground troops deployment is backed with high-tech technologies such as drones, used for surveillance, communications systems that allow data to be shared securely, satellites powering these channels and more, Gen. Anil Chauhan, highlighted.

The four pillars of cybersecurity in defence: maintaining operational integrity, protecting classified information, supply chain security, and deterring industrial espionage.

The defence industry is responsible for developing and maintaining critical military systems, infrastructure and communication networks. These systems are essential for national security, and any breach or compromise could have devastating consequences, including the potential for espionage, sabotage or theft of sensitive military information.

A strong cybersecurity posture can serve as a deterrent against cyberattacks. Knowing that a defence organisation has robust defences and the capability to retaliate in cyberspace can discourage potential adversaries from launching attacks.

As defence systems become increasingly reliant on advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, IoT, and autonomous systems, the attack surface for cyber threats also expands. Keeping pace with technological advancements and securing these technologies is crucial, Gen. Chauhan says.

The defence industry is preparing for potential large-scale cyber conflicts through extensive exercises, meticulous planning, and the implementation of innovative solutions like cyber ranges and digital twins.

In this context, “Exercise Cyber Suraksha-2024” to further enhance collaboration & integration among military and national agencies.

The exercise brings together participants from various military and national organizations, facilitating cross-pollination of ideas and strategies to counter emerging cyber threats.

By fostering collaboration and integration among key stakeholders, the exercise aims to strengthen India’s overall cyber defence preparedness.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan attended ‘Exercise Cyber Suraksha – 2024’, on May 22, 2024, and underscored the importance of strengthening India’s cyber defence capabilities.

The comprehensive cyber defence exercise is being conducted by Defence Cyber Agency from 20 – 24 May 2024. It aims to further develop Cyber Defence Capability of all Cyber security organisations and promote synergy amongst all stakeholders. It focusses on enhancing collaboration and integration among participants from various military and prominent national organizations.

The CDS highlighted the critical need for jointness among all stakeholders in the cyber domain and praised the initiative for fostering a collaborative environment to tackle emerging cyber threats. He commended the participants and staff for their dedication and efforts in organizing the Exercise.

Exercise Cyber Suraksha – 2024 aims to empower participants by enhancing their cyber defence skills, techniques and capabilities; share best practices, and work towards a unified and robust cyber defence posture.

It will promote jointmanship and synergy in planning and preparation of a Cyber Defence Framework. The event reaffirms the commitment of the Indian Armed Forces to safeguarding national security in the increasingly important cyber domain.

In an era where cyber threats transcend geographical boundaries, exercises like ‘Cyber Suraksha-2024’ play a crucial role in enhancing India’s ability to detect, respond, and mitigate cyberattacks effectively. The exercise underscores the nation’s commitment to staying ahead of the curve in the rapidly evolving cyber landscape, ensuring the security and resilience of its critical infrastructure and digital assets.

As the exercise progresses, participants will engage in simulated scenarios, testing their skills and preparedness in responding to various cyber incidents. The insights and lessons learned from this exercise will contribute to the development of robust cyber defence strategies and the reinforcement of India’s defensive posture in the digital realm.
