INS Sudarshini reaches Boston, showcases India’s maritime diplomacy
New Delhi, July 13. India’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived in Boston on July 12 after participating in the prestigious Sail4th 250 celebrations in New York, continuing its role as a maritime ambassador of goodwill during its ongoing Lokayan 2026 transoceanic expedition.
The Indian naval vessel took part in the Grand Parade of Sails, marking the opening of Sail Boston 2026, one of the world’s largest gatherings of tall ships. The ceremonial entry into Boston highlighted India’s growing maritime engagement with the United States and its efforts to promote cultural and naval diplomacy.
India’s Consul General in Boston, Raghuram Sastry, embarked on board INS Sudarshini for the Grand Parade of Sails and the ship’s ceremonial arrival in the city. Flying the Indian Tricolour, the vessel sailed past iconic Boston landmarks, including Castle Island and the Seaport District, before berthing at Boston Fish Pier.
INS Sudarshini is among more than 60 tall ships representing over 20 countries participating in Sail Boston 2026. As part of its Lokayan 2026 voyage, the ship is showcasing India’s rich maritime heritage while strengthening international goodwill, cultural exchange and naval cooperation. The vessel will remain open to visitors in Boston from July 12 to 15.
The Boston visit follows successful port calls at Norfolk, Baltimore and New York, where the ship participated in commemorative events linked to the 250th anniversary celebrations in the United States.
The Ministry of Defence said INS Sudarshini’s participation in Sail Boston 2026 reinforces the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime diplomacy while further strengthening the expanding India-US maritime partnership. The deployment also underscores India’s efforts to project its centuries-old seafaring traditions and enhance people-to-people engagement through naval outreach.
