Defence Ministry unveils sixth indigenisation list covering 405 Items
New Delhi, Aug 18. The Department of Defence Production (DDP) under the Ministry of Defence has notified the sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL), covering 405 strategically important defence items with an estimated business potential of ₹3,070 crore (around $321 million).
The list includes line replaceable units, sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spares, components and raw materials that are currently required to be indigenised. Of the 405 items, 16 are associated with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), while 389 are related to defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs).
The items span a wide range of defence platforms and systems. These include components and equipment for the Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Utility Helicopter, Su-30MKI, Light Combat Aircraft and AL-31FP engine, besides armoured platforms such as the T-72, T-90 and BMP-II.
The list also covers warships, missile systems including Konkurs-M, Invar and MRSAM, and defence electronics such as radars, sonars, fire-control systems and satellite communication systems. High Explosive Anti-Tank ammunition and other critical defence equipment have also been included.
The detailed list has been made available on the SRIJAN Defence Portal, with each item carrying an indicative timeline for indigenisation. Once successfully developed in India, the items will be procured from domestic industry.
The DPSUs and the ICG will pursue indigenisation through multiple routes, including the government’s ‘Make’ procedure and in-house development, with participation from Indian industry, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The sixth PIL is part of the government’s broader push to achieve self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) initiative. The move is expected to create additional opportunities for domestic manufacturers, encourage investment and innovation, strengthen the defence industrial ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports.
The DDP launched the SRIJAN Defence Portal in August 2020 to provide a platform for DPSUs and Service Headquarters to offer defence items to Indian companies, including MSMEs and startups, for indigenous development and production.
According to the Ministry, more than 33,000 defence items had been offered for indigenisation through DPSUs and Service Headquarters on the portal up to June 2026. This includes 5,012 items covered by the first five Positive Indigenisation Lists.
More than 15,700 defence items have so far been successfully indigenised, with an estimated import substitution value of around ₹9,000 crore over the past five years. In addition, DPSUs placed procurement orders, including for in-house production, worth approximately ₹10,000 crore with domestic vendors up to March 2026.
The latest list is expected to further expand the role of Indian industry in defence production and deepen the country’s domestic manufacturing capabilities.
