New Delhi. Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, who assumed charge as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on November 1, has outlined an ambitious vision for the force under the guiding theme ‘VAYU’, focusing on operational preparedness, indigenous capabilities, technological innovation and greater jointness with the Army and Navy.
Soon after taking over as the IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Dixit paid homage at the National War Memorial to the brave personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. He was subsequently accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Air Force Station New Delhi.
In his inaugural address, the new Air Chief identified four strategic pillars under the ‘VAYU’ framework, which he said would guide the future trajectory of the IAF and strengthen its ability to meet evolving national security challenges.
The acronym VAYU represents Vigilance, Victory and Readiness; Aatmanirbharta (Self-reliance); Yukti (trick, strategy, method, skill, or a logical solution); and Unity of Effort.
The first pillar, Vigilance, Victory and Readiness, emphasises maintaining the highest level of operational preparedness across all IAF formations while restoring the service’s combat strength to sanctioned levels. The focus is on ensuring that the force remains prepared to respond effectively to emerging threats and operate across the full spectrum of military contingencies.
Under the second pillar, ‘Aatmanirbharta’, the Air Chief has called for accelerating indigenous capabilities across aircraft platforms, sensors, weapons systems and advanced technologies. The emphasis is on achieving greater operational self-reliance and sustaining combat capabilities through domestic research, development and production.
The third pillar, Yukti, seeks to harness ingenuity and innovation in military doctrine, technology and operational procedures. This includes the integration of Artificial Intelligence-enabled command and control systems, strengthening counter-drone capabilities, enhancing operational resilience and preparing the IAF for emerging domains of warfare.
The fourth pillar, ‘Unity of Effort’, underscores the importance of strengthening jointness and coordination with the Indian Army, Navy and other national agencies. It is aligned with the national vision of JAI – Jointness, Aatmanirbharta and Innovation – to develop integrated military capabilities and improve coordination among the armed forces.
An Experimental Test Pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor, Air Chief Marshal Dixit has more than 3,500 hours of flying experience. During his distinguished career, he has held several important operational and strategic appointments, including Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command and Vice Chief of the Air Staff.
Through the VAYU vision, the new Chief of the Air Staff has articulated a roadmap for developing an operationally prepared, technologically advanced, self-reliant and seamlessly integrated Indian Air Force. The overarching objective is to strengthen India’s credible air power, safeguard national interests and deter potential adversaries through sustained combat readiness and technological superiority.
