Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s New Mayor, Pays Tribute to Nehru in Victory Speech
New York. November 5. New York City just made history, by electing Democrat Zohran Mandani as NYC’s first Indian origin Mayor.
There was widespread joy as the results were announced with Mamdani getting 1,036,051 votes against Trump-supported Independent Andrew Cuomo’s 8,54,995. There was a third candidate, Republican Curtis Sliwa, but he never had a chance.
In his victory speech, he spoke of democratic socialism, liberal thought of the 1950s and 1960s, quoting specifically India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s famous speech Tryst With Destiny on India’s independence in 1947 to say: “Standing before you, I think of the words of Jawaharlal Nehru, A moment comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance. Tonight, we have stepped out from the old into the new.”
Mamdani, the first Muslim and the youngest mayor in New York’s history, was born to Indian-African parentage, on October 18, 1991 in Kampala, Ugandda.. His mother, Mira Nair, is a famous Indian film maker.
At 34, he is youngest mayor of the vibrant and ever-bright New York, a city that throbs in the hearts of not only Americans but millions elsewhere in the world. It’s a city known for making and breaking dreams of everyone who aspire to be part of America.
A spirited and effusive leader, Mamdani has tingled the hopes of every dreamer, rich, middle class and poor.
New York is a capitalist city, a dream nonetheless for fortune seekers globally. Living there is expensive, and rents, healthcare and good food are not in everybody’s reach. Mamdani has promised to ease prices and availability. He has won support from not only progressives but respected Senators and the rich also.
NYC is short of funds, under President Donald Trump’s Federal Government’s continued shutdown for 36 days now. And Trump has clearly stated he is not going to help if Mamdani is elected. Not only that, the ever-blunt Trump has described him as a ‘Communist Lunatic’ and a ‘Disaster Waiting to Happen.’
